The course begins with an introduction to CANopen and its history. We see where CANopen fits in as a digital communications system and what its advantages are over traditional analogue systems. We also discuss the different layers of the CANopen protocol and advise on the best installation and implementation requirements of the bus.

About the Course

CANopen is a high-level communication protocol and device profile specification that is based on the Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol. CANopen is extensively used in motor control, and its core operation is within industrial automation networks by enabling standardised plug and play installations for new devices connected within the network.

This course is completed in 1 day. It includes a theoretical and practical aspect. You will receive a certificate upon successful completion.

Due to the technical nature of this course and our desire to see a maximum pass rate, we limit groups to a maximum of 8 people.

Course Outline and Certification

The course is made up of a theoretical and practical component and the course outline is as follows:

Theory Component:

Basic knowledge, Application layer (CANopen basic concepts, network administration, PDO, SDO, SFO), Link layer (CAN frame formats, exchange protection), Physical layer (Network characteristics, recommended connections), Diagnostics (LEDs, diagnostic PLC objects, tools), Useful CAN components (Interfaces, repeaters, bridges, medium converters)

Practical Component:

Setting up CANopen communication instances, Sniffing CAN data on the bus with the use of a bus analyser, Running diagnostics on a CANopen network under various scenarios


It is most beneficial if the attendee has a technical qualification or good experience with or understanding of digital communications systems.

Occasional exposure to cabling PROFIBUS networks has been found to be insufficient in preparing potential candidates.

Therefore, as a guideline, potential candidates must:

Have a good command of the English language

Be able to understand and interpret technical ideas and systems

Understand the basics of communications and what it entails
